Common Questions
Straight answers on cost, shipping, turnaround, and how to get started — so you know what to expect before you reach out.
Every job is quoted individually. No two vintage drums arrive in the same condition, so a flat price list would be misleading — the honest way is to look at your specific drum and quote the actual work it needs. Email a few photos (the shell, the badge, and any hardware) and you'll get a clear quote before any work begins.
Both. If you're in the Aurora / greater Chicagoland area, you can arrange local drop-off by appointment. If you're anywhere else, you can ship your drum in — drummers and collectors nationwide do. Either way, the process starts the same: send photos, get a quote.
Turnaround varies by project and by how much work the drum needs — a hardware clean-up and a full shell restoration are very different undertakings. You'll get a realistic timeframe as part of your quote, so there are no surprises. Vintage work is done carefully and not rushed; the goal is a result that lasts, not a fast one.
This matters a great deal with vintage instruments. Preservation means cleaning and stabilizing the original surfaces — original plating, original finish, original markings — so the drum keeps its history and its value. Refinishing means renewing a surface that genuinely can't be saved. The default here is always preservation first; refinishing happens only where it's necessary, and it's disclosed, never hidden. A restored drum should tell a consistent, honest story.
Sometimes the right answer is yes, and sometimes the honest answer is "restore it because you love it, not as an investment." That's part of what an appraisal is for — a comp-based read on what your drum is, what it's worth, and what restoring it would realistically take. You'll get a straight assessment either way, grounded in what comparable drums have actually sold for.
Email photos of your drum — the shell, the badge, and any hardware, plus the maker and serial if you have them — to [email protected], or call (815) 274-4379. You'll get an honest read on what it is, what it's worth, and a quote for the work. From there, you drop it off locally or ship it in, and the bench work begins.
Send a few photos and you'll have a quote in hand. Local drop-off or ship from anywhere.
